Positive Affirmations

What are affirmations?

Statements you repeat to challenge negative thinking or unhelpful, intrusive thoughts. Positive phrases build you up and help reconnect other positive qualities while offering encouragement and motivation.

Are they effective?
  • Affirmations are effective for replacing negative or anxious thoughts with positivity, which will help you relax and calm the body.
  • 2018 study indicates that affirming yourself can help you cope with uncertainty and improve your self-worth.
How to make the most of affirmation?
  • Repeating affirmation is very helpful, but there are ways to make them more effective. When choosing phrases, consider what will help you the most right now. Then you can set a plan and follow through.
  • Consider taking deep breaths before practicing your daily affirmations. Then try to observe how those phrases affect you, emotionally and physically, after your practice.
Affirmations to try:
  • I am strong enough to get through this hardship.
  • I have the skills and abilities to handle this difficult situation.
  • I believe in myself and can achieve my goals.
  • I am confident and ready to start the day.
  • I am learning every day, viewing setbacks as opportunities to grow.
  • I trust myself and follow my instincts.
  • I am valuable and contribute to the world around me.
  • I am powerful and capable of success.

National Nutrition Month

This month our focus is to educate our employees on making healthier food choices and developing healthy eating habits. Here are a few simple steps and tips to begin to make healthier changes in your daily lifestyle.

HEALTHIER HABITS
  • Try Cooking from Scratch– One simple change you can make is to cook more meals at home. Cooking at home allows you to control the ingredients that go into your food, and it can be a fun activity to do with family or friends.
  • Incorporate Vitamins into Your Diet- One of the easiest and simplest ways to make sure your body receives the key daily nutrients it needs to function is to supplement vitamins into your diet alongside healthy eating and exercise.
  • Increase Your Water Intake- Despite how important it is to stay hydrated, there are many things that keep us from drinking enough water. To break this habit here are some things you might try. For every cup of coffee drink one glass of water. Add lots of ice to your drinks or smoothies. Lastly, invest in a smart water bottle.
  • Add More Fruits and Veggies- Try making half of your plate fruits and veggies. Focus on whole fruits and vary the type of veggies you incorporate! You can have fresh, frozen, or canned options, all will give you the same health benefits!
  • The Benefit of Meal Planning- Meal prepping is simply preparing your meals ahead of time, which can be extremely beneficial to those leading busier lifestyles. This saves time, allows you to control portion sizes (which can also directly result in saving money per portion), and can become an effective way to develop a routine of healthy eating.

Cultivating Self-Love

This Valentine’s Day, we are challenging you to make another type of affection a priority: self-love. We all know that self-love is important for our wellbeing and overall happiness. But how exactly can we cultivate more of it?

REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE ENOUGH

When we are bombarded with messages that constantly tell us that we need more to be happy, it is a radical act to put your foot down and accept that who you are in this moment, is in fact, enough.

ENGAGE WITH THE WORLD

Interacting with the world around you from a grounded place of self-worth will undeniably define your reality. If you act from a place of worthiness life will reflect that back to you.

LET GO OF YOUR ARMOR

Paradoxically, what we think is protecting us is preventing us from becoming the people we want to be. Do you know what armor you are carrying?

SPEAK TO YOURSELF THE WAY YOU SPEAK TO SOMEONE YOU LOVE

If you’re willing to be kind and loving to your friends when they are feeling vulnerable, why are you not doing yourself the same favor?

LET GO OF PERFECTIONISM

Always striving to be perfect is, quite frankly, unrealistic. Because guess what? We’re human. And one of our most decidedly human traits is that we are not perfect all the time.

Best Books to Encourage Self-Love:
  • “The Gifts of Imperfection” by Brené Brown
  • “The Self-Love Experiment” by Shannon Kaiser
  • Self-Compassion” by Kristin Neff, PhD
  • “Love Yourself Like Your Life Depends on It” by Kamal Ravikant
Best Movies on Self-Love:
  • The Fault in Our Stars
  • The Help
  • Hidden Figures
  • Inside Out
  • Same Kind of Different as Me
  • The Pursuit of Happyness

How to Stay Well Balanced

Our desire to succeed can sometimes lead us to neglect our well-being and personal relationships. As the year is just beginning, here are just a few tips that can help you improve your work-life balance in the new year. Cheers to 2023!

5 TIPS FOR STAYING WELL BALANCED
  • Get Plenty of Sleep – Lack of sleep can lead to poor concentration, weight gain, depression, and high blood pressure. Try to get 7-8 hours of sleep per night. Stop using electronic devices at least 1-2 hours prior to your bedtime.
  • Just Say No – It’s time to put your health and well-being first and say no when you can. It is sometimes assumed that by saying no you are being rude. To achieve that elusive equilibrium, set clear boundaries for your colleagues and customers
  • Stay In the Present – The concept of “I will be happy when….” is a surefire way to get stuck in a rut. Instead, find joy in the present moment.
  • Be Honest with Yourself – It’s okay to not be okay. If you feel overwhelmed, admitting it to yourself is the first step. It’s when you realize that you are overwhelmed that you can take the first step towards feeling like yourself again.
  • Let It Go – It’s impossible to do everything and make everyone happy. So, decide which issues are worth your efforts and let go of those things that do not serve you this year.

Finding the balance that works best for your needs is imperative for your health, productivity, and motivation. Small but meaningful changes will allow you to improve your work-life balance and find more satisfaction in your way of living.

Arctic Front Event

Our operational area is under a severe weather advisory due to an Arctic Front Event that will be gradually strengthening throughout tomorrow into this weekend.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a cold front will move through our area on Thursday. Temperatures are expected to drop very quickly into the 30’s and 20’s by Thursday’s night. Wind Chill could make temperatures feel like they are in the 10’s or 1’s.

A Hard Freeze Watch has been issued for Harris County December 22 at 12:00 PM through December 24 at 12:00 PM. Additionally, a Wind Chill Watch has been issued for Harris County from December 22 at 6:00 PM through December 23 at 12:00 PM. Residents should expect additional watches and warnings to be issued through Saturday.

Please take the following measures throughout the rest of the week in preparation for this event:

If driving is necessary, take extra precautions while traveling for business or personal purposes

  • Slow down – Ensure extra distance (reaction/stopping time) to traffic moving around you and driver under the speed limit due to possible ice on the roads
  • Stay Aware – Eliminate driving distractions such as phones and loud music
    • Watch for wet and/or icy roads – especially black ice (thin coating of glazed transparent ice) on roads  on bridges and overpasses
    • Inspect and prepare your vehicle – against ice, freezing precipitation and generally sub-optimal driving conditions. For further read, click here.
    • Review Road Conditions – Road conditions before leaving your house Houston TranStar Map

Use caution when walking on flat/sloped surfaces at work and at home

    • Slow down, take small steps, and if possible, keep your hands free for balance

Secure vulnerable worksites, facilities and equipment against icy conditions and freezing precipitation

    • Secure outdoor lifting equipment and/or erected stabilizing structures that may become compromised due to ice and wind
    • Ensure exposed material susceptible to freezing is covered or otherwise protected against failure
    • All outdoor and powered industrial equipment susceptible to damage from freezing and icing should be moved indoors
    • Jobs occurring “at-height” or on elevated work platforms should have the area inspected for ice and be performed at an appropriate speed. Do not attempt to continue work/commute if it is not safe to do so
    AT HOME TIPS:
    PEOPLE
    • Keep warm, stay inside if possible.
    • If you need to go out, dress in layers and wear hats, gloves, and an appropriate coat.
    • Avoid overexertion, as cold weather puts added strain on your body.
    PETS
    • Prolonged exposure to the forecasted temperatures and wind may be fatal to unprotected livestock and pets.
    • Bring pets inside and move other animals or livestock to sheltered areas.
    • Keep adequate food and water available.
    PIPES
    • Proper winterization of any exposed pipes/plumbing will be needed to prevent damage.
    • Disconnect outdoor hoses, drain, and store in protected area.
    • Wrap exposed faucets and pipes – including those outside the house or in unheated crawl spaces, attics, garages, and other areas.
    • If leaving out of town for the upcoming holidays, shut off the main water supply and drain pipes to prevent damage should they burst.
    PLANTS
    • Bring potted plants inside or store in garage near interior wall to provide extra warmth and protection from wind.
    • For cold-sensitive outdoor plants, put down extra mulch and consider covering with a cloth fabric of some kind to shield the plants from wind and frost.
    • Tropical plants/vegetation will require maximum freeze protection.
    HEATER SAFETY

Portable space heaters are often used to heat rooms and homes. If not used properly, they can cause fires, severe injuries, and death. If using a portable heater, remember these important safety tips:

    • Keep heaters at least 3 feet from anything that can burn, including furniture, carpets, curtains, and people.
    • Place heaters on solid, non-flammable surfaces.
    • Never block exits with a heater and keep them out of the way of foot traffic.
    • Keep children away from heaters.
    • Always plug heaters directly into wall outlets – NEVER use an extension cord.
    • Turn off and unplug space heaters when leaving a room or going to bed.

Protect yourself from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning by installing a battery-operated CO detector (if one is installed, check batteries) and never use generators, grills, camp stoves, or similar devices indoors.

      Hunton Heroes 2022

As this year begins to wrap up, we want to highlight the philanthropic initiatives that our employees have taken part in. From onsite volunteering, to collections, and so much more, our goal is to have a lasting effect on our community and those in need. We give not only on Giving Tuesday but all year long. At Hunton, our purpose is to radically improve the environments in which people live, work, learn, and play.

      GULF COAST REGIONAL BLOOD DRIVE: February 8th – 10th & August 16th – 18th

Hunton Group partnered with the Gulf Coast Blood Center to hold two blood drives this year. The need for blood is especially high and the Gulf Coast Blood Center needs 1,000 donations every day of the year to serve patients in the community. Our donation could be the difference between life and death, and we are so grateful for our employees who participated. GiveBlood.org

      HAY CENTER: May 25th

This year, Hunton Group teamed up with The Houston Alumni and Youth Center to sponsor ten graduates (each graduate received four gifts, forty gifts’ totals). The HAY Center’s mission is to empower current and former foster youth to be successful, productive adults through training & mentorship in education, employment, & personal achievement. One of Hunton Group’s core values is “imagine it” and we want all students to have possibilities in their endeavors and future successes. Hay Center Website

HOUSTON FOOD BANK VOLUNTEERING: June 11th

The Houston Food Bank hosted their volunteer day on a Saturday in June, from 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM that some of our employees partook in! Sorting, repackaging, and inspecting donation items were a few of the tasks at hand. Employees were able to bring friends and family to volunteer. It is a rewarding feeling to start a Saturday morning giving back to the community! The Houston Food Bank Website

      BACKPACK DELIVERY: August

Members of our executive team passed out backpacks to title 9 elementary schools. These backpacks are part of the Hunton Backpack Program which the Cool Rides and Hot Rods Car Event’s proceeds go toward. Pictures of the day delivering backpacks.

      HUNGER GAMES: September 1st – 30th

The Houston Food Bank’s Hunger Game was a competition in which participants competed against other groups in the community. The overall competition was to produce the most meals possible by having teams volunteer, fundraise, and participate in food drives. Between three of our office locations, we had over 160 pounds of cans donated! With everyone’s participation, The Houston Food Bank was able to generate 32,707 meals during the month of September. The Houston Food Bank Website

      ST. JUDE WALK/RUN: September 24th

A group of us started our Saturday morning early at the Houston Sports Park to walk for St. Jude. The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. The months leading up, we were able to donate and raise funds through our personal and team pages. Day of, we wore matching t-shirts to represent the company at the field before for coffee and treats. The 3.1-mile walk was a terrific way for our employees to give back and spend quality time together. St. Jude Walk/Run Website

THE ROSE BAKE DRIVE: October 14th

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we participate by hosting a bake drive where employees can bring in or make sweet treats to collect donations for breast cancer awareness. The Rose Bake Drive was held in the breakrooms at three of our locations. All proceeds went to the Rose Organization – which is a breast imaging center whose mission is to save lives through breast health services and care. TheRose.org

BE A RESOURCE (B.E.A.R.) TOY DRIVE: December 12th

The holidays are an exciting time to give back and we do this by teaming up with BEAR (Be a Resource). BEAR is a non-profit organization in the Greater Houston Area that works with CPS children, providing resources, support, and basic need for a better future. This November, The Hunton Group “adopted” 60 kids with two wishes each. Employees where then able to sign up and gift these children’s items off their Wishlist. Gifts are due by December 7th and then dropped off at the BEAR Warehouse so that the kids could enjoy a bright holiday season! Be A Resource Website.

      Breast Cancer Awareness 2022

Annual screenings are crucial to finding breast cancer early, and a mammogram is the best screening tool available. Women with an average risk for breast cancer typically begin annual mammograms at age 40.

      • Plan: Two weeks after monthly cycle
      • Call: Arrange for previous mammograms to be sent for comparison. Or get copies to bring with you.
      • Prepare: Don’t use deodorants, powders, lotions, or perfumes on your chest. They can show up as white spots making reading more difficult.
      • Dress: Wear a blouse or top – with pants or skirt.
      • Avoid: Necklaces or jewelry on your neck or chest during mammogram.
      • Discuss: Tell the doctor any concerns you have had.
      • Ask: Find out when and how you’ll be notified of the results of your mammogram.
      • Take Action: Talk with your doctor about a screening schedule that is right for you. Be sure to mention if breast cancer runs in your family. Together, you can decide when and how often you need mammograms. Check your benefits plan to see what services may be covered.
HUNTON CARES BAKE SALE TO BENEFIT THE ROSE

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14 in the breakrooms. Make and then buy baked items for our bake sale.

Proceeds go to The Rose Organization. Since its launch in 1986, The Rose has served nearly 500,000 patients and is now the leading nonprofit breast health care organization in southeast Texas giving access to treatment to more than 40,000 women annually. Hunton Cares Food Drive

The first Friday of September marks National Food Bank Day. Hunger is a huge problem globally, and here at Hunton we partnered with the Houston Food Bank to combat this. The Houston Food Bank is hosting their Hunger Games Event on September 12 – 30, 2022. This competition is where groups compete against one another for points by donating time, funds, and food. The Hunton Group is registered for this event and will be competing. Our core values state that we are to, “Love It and to Be Kind.” We are proud to be living into these values through our Hunton Cares program.

According to the Houston Food bank, other ways to help include:
      • Join their online communities on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn to get ongoing information on events, promotions and announcements.
      • Update your social status to share a hunger fact with friends and colleagues to raise awareness.
      • Volunteer at Houston Food Bank.
      • Make a donation. For every $1 donated to Houston Food Bank, you can provide a person with a full day of meals.
